Default charging problem 2001 polaris

Im stumped...my wheeler was running good til tonight. I shut it down and when I went to start it it seemed like battery was dead. I wanted 20 minutes and it started...but when I got back home and shut it off again. It wouldnt start again. I bosted it and started right up. The i held a test on the battery and it tested at 8.45 running and then i went to the fan plug and tested it there and it tested at 12.2...then i unhooked the pos. of the battery and held the tester on just the red cable and grounded to the frame and it only tested at 7,89...... then with the battery not hooked up at all the battery tests at 10.23 what the hell could it be????

Check that all wires are hooked into the regulator/rectifier located behinds the radiator. They have a bad habit on the red wire coming unplugged. If wires are secure and it's not charging 14 volts back to the battery at an idle, then the regulator is usually the problem. Not too good of idea disconnecting a battery while it's running either. Can damage the cdi and other electrical components.Since the battery has been drained down, might be a good idea to have it load tested also. Regulator is Item #35. 90% of the time it's a regulator problem if the battery isn't receiving 14 volts while the engine is running.Rarely is it a stator problem, but you can take the yellow wires from the stator leading to the regulator and see if they short to ground with an ohm meter. They should show a small resistance and not zero out. Here's one cheap place for regulators you can check out. Polaris ATV Rectifier Regulator
