low speed
#1
Hi all,
I joined because my 98 sportsman 500 was running like crap, I learned that it was probably the camshaft and to put in an HO cam from 2001 or newer. I put the new cam in and everything is running good... I have been plowing snow and lots of torque to move the snow but today I went down the road to plow a friends drive way and I noticed at full throttle I was only going 35mph which is really weird because before I did the camshaft the wheeler would go about 60-70mph. Any ideas to why I lost all my speed? it sounds and runs fine at full throttle just no speed...
thanks in advance...

Plowing snow and lots of torque as you say may be what's happened. Takes a toll on belts, ramp buttons and other clutch parts.Plus if any of this is in high range even more stress on the clutch system. I'd first check for excess belt slack. Just put a straight edge over the clutches, pull down on the top of the belt,if more than 1 1/2" slack from top of the belt to the straight edge, the belt needs to be replaced. Plus I'd blow out clutch dust in an open area as it makes a mess. Hopefully it's just the belt needs replacing. If it still seems like the engine rpms build but speed doesn't, probably time to check/replace the driven clutch ramp buttons along with checking wear on the drive clutch buttons. I was constantly replacing belts and ramp buttons for farmers and ranchers that used their machine as a work horse. Remember to use low range only as belt wear and clutch heat are reduced. does any one know how to add more torque to my rancher 420, I've change the stock tires to 26' interco swamp, and I notice lost of torque after doing this change. I also have a HMF optimizer, exhaust, K&N filter, Snorkel. I would like to gain more torque for the mud, any help, I haven't change the settings of my optimizer, any help or advice. Thanks
