No power 96 sportsman 500

Hello OPT, I asked a question last week about midrange loss of power and you suggested dropping the e clip one notch and I did that and there's a significant loss of power pretty much overall and now going up small hills it's like a truck with positrack in the sand, it starts hopping. Is that because of a lack of power or do I have a clutch issue? I replaced the buttons and cleaned everything a few weeks ago and put a brand new belt on it. About the jetting, should I try to go one step up from the original setting?

If you're sure the rear clutch is pre wound correct, and you can eliminate it or the front clutch, just try the other way on the needle clip. If it makes no difference, then you're going to have to look elsewhere as to the "hopping?" If you're talking about rpms limiting just pull the black wire from the limiter module and see if it helps.Item #31. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse If this doesn't help you may want to check out the rear drives shafts and prop shaft. Could be worn u-joints,stripped prop shaft splines causing this "hopping"

When I installed the new buttons I preloaded the spring 1/3 turn, the hopping started after I installed the new buttons. Is that loaded enough or do I need to go 2/3 turn on it? It's definitely not hitting the limiter like it does in reverse if that's what you mean. I will try setting the e clip one position higher than it was originally and see how it preforms at that setting. As always, thanks for the advice!

Also I put the spring in the number 2 holes on both ends, should I maybe put it on 1 and 2 for a little more tension? I read in the manual the tighter the spring the sooner it upshifts under a load.

Good afternoon OPT! I adjusted the e clip one up from original setting and it runs great now, good power but I'm still having the issue with the hopping. It's not as bad now that the power is better but it's still present and only at low speeds in sandy conditions or going up hills. Should I try a different setting on the driven clutch spring? I really don't think there is a problem elsewhere. The u joints are all good and tight and it happened right after I took apart the driven clutch, cleaned it and installed the new buttons. It's also way more pronounced in low gear than in high and doesn't matter if it's in 2 wheel or 4 wheel. I just can't see it being a propshaft or spline problem because of the circumstances that it started with... Even though it's a 1996, it only has 2800 miles on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

When you replaced the ramp buttons and belt was the belt an oem 3211077 or aftermarket one? Could be the difference if you said this started after the clutch repair.

"hopping" as you call it could be caused by a glazed burnt spot on the belt whether it's old or new or clutches out of alignment, belt grabbing the inside of the front drive clutch sheath. Make sure the belt is centered between both clutches at an idle, and check for any glazed/burnt spots on the sides of the belt. This can cause jerking, slipping movements if there are or the "hopping" you describe especially under a load or in low gear. If the clutches are out of alignment, you can get extra shims at any good hardware store that are behind the driven clutch.Just take the old one and match it up.
