Check for spark, then do a compression check. If a 115psi or lower probably time for a new top end.

A few things you can try are to pull the plug cap and see if you have spark with the bare wire against the head. If you do have spark, the plug cap resistor is bad. If it still doesn't have spark, pull the black lead from the reverse limiter module under the front panel.Limiter is the module on the left, the only one with a black wire.If still no spark, pull the black kill wire from the cdi module and see if it has spark. If it doesn't you'll need a manual for further tests. The Explorer 250 was only made a couple years and manuals are hard to find. This one for a 2003 Trail Blazer 250 should have the same electronics.Look at the trouble shooting tests plus look at the wiring schematic. The schematic shows tests on the stator and coil and should help you narrow down the problem. http://gh-ftp.com/ORV%20Manuals/Pola...0%20-%20SM.pdf
