Default Changing water pump seal..OPT

OPT,

Have you changed out the water pump seal/ oil seal on an 08 800? Is the water pump seal and oil seal a single replacement piece or 2 pieces ? I've seen several posts on other sites about changing the seals, and they look like they are 2 separate pieces, but I cannot find the oil seal part # in any of the schematics I look at. The schematics only show the water pump seal part #, and I can't tell by looking at pictures if they are all part of the replacement water pump seal or not. Also, do you know if the water pump shaft will simply slide out of the oil pump, or is it attached to the pump in any way ?

I've noticed water seeping out of the weep hole on both my sportsman and rzr over the last month, so I'm sure it's time to replace the seals, I just haven't had to do it before. I figure it's probably easier in the long run to just replace the water pump shaft instead of taking the chance of not cleaning it good enough and damaging the new seals, and still having a leak.

Any tricks I need to know about ?

Thanks !!!!

Other than investing in a good manual that shows you step by step, here's a good video that can help. The stator cover has to be removed to do it right.Same engine but in a RZR Step by Step - How to Replace the Water/Oil Pump Seal - Polaris RZR Forum - RZR Forums.net

Actually, I had found that one, but I appreciate the help so I wasn't going to be rude and not thank you. lol

What you think about this one ?

I know pulling the engine to pull the stator cover, etc is the proper way to do it, but that's not an option right now. I think I'm gonna try this first, and if it still leaks, then I'll bite the bullet and do it the proper way when I can.

NO!! You don't have to pull the engine, just the outer stator cover! Less chance of shaft damage, plus the oil seal really needs to be installed from the rear, not through the inside.. This I have to go with the manual on as I've had to replace bent oil/water pump shafts that people try to take short cuts on,then you have to pull the engine. Do it right.

You sure ? Looking at the rzr and sportsman, I don't see any way to get the oil seal from the rear without pulling the stator cover. And I see no way to do that without pulling the engine. There's no room....especially in the rzr. You got a trick ?

In the Rzr yes you have to pull the engine, but not in the Sportsman 800.Replacing water pump and oil seals are still done the same way after you remove the engine on the Rzr.Remove the cover, pull the flywheel and bendix. Then just three bots actually holding the stator/gear cover on. You can remove the stator plate if you wish and take the cover to the work bench to remove and install the seals.Dirt Cheap Yamaha & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse Plus if you don't have a manual here's one.Shows you step by step.2008 Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI Service Manual PDF Download
