Can you take apart the lower part of the engine without taking the top end apart I need to replace the shaft my water pump impeller goes on.

Keep forgetting what machine you have.. Anyway the answer is no,unless you have a 600,700 or 800. Those you can replace the oil pump shaft with tearing the whole engine apart.Normally they don't go bad,people usually bend em replacing water pump seals..

it is a 425 and the threaded end to hold impeller on broke off unless you have another idea how to connect the impeller

Oh man... Bummer.. Nope,don't have a better idea for this one. Oil pump shaft works the water pump also. You have to split the engine cases. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse A lot of work for a 60 buck shaft. I've only had to replace them when people went crazy on replacing water pump seals with out the "tool" needed and bent them.
