See if the woodruff key is broken and if the sprocket has moved. That would throw timing off that you show.. Once back together just use the plated links in the pics on timing up the cam. Use medium(blue) locktite on the crank shaft threads when you tighten the slotted nut and you shouldn't have any more problems. From the factory NO locktite is used on the threads, but should have been.. Even though the slotted nut is reverse threaded and you wouldn't think it could back off since the engine runs clock wise and the force should keep the nut tight, they can back off and I've seen it happen several times. Problem is in most cases if the slotted nut backs off the key gets worn or breaks especially if the sprocket has moved. Plus check the lower sprocket itself. If the channel for the key is wallowed out the lower sprocket will need replacing. Easier now since you have the stator off to do it right.. Get a new key, lower sprocket if necessary, then just pull the tensioner and use the plated links to align the lower crank sprocket mark with the case mark and the two plate links on the cam sprocket. Then it's timed right.

Key slot should be somewhere around 12 o'clock position, but again the most important thing is the mark on the lower crank sprocket and the case mark must line up,then just install the one plated link on this sprocket tooth, the other two plated links on the two dots on the cam sprocket and it's timed.. Simple procedure. Just look at these pics again when you sober up.. https://atvconnection.com/forums/pol...ml#post3305250

so after a good head scratch i took a look and am determining that it actually indeed IS in time....i was under the assumption the key was supposed to be at 12 o clock if you look straight at it...its more like 2 o clock lined right up with the cylinder...looks timed to me? marks line up, cam looks right..right?

Just turn your head to the right and everything will look straight to you.. Yes the engine is at an angle, the key slot also. Main thing key and sprocket looks ok,lower timing mark is on the money and the cam sprocket alignment pin is center of the head. Again you have to turn your head for it to look right. Loctite the shaft threads, install the slotted nut then the stator plate, flywheel, recoil cover and see how it does.
