Yes, there is a CVT belt system. The variator pulley on the crankshaft drives a belt that connects to the variable-width pulley on the input to the trans/transfer housing. The engine and trans/transfer are connected with a backer plate behind the CVT pulleys for rigidity. The trans/transfer case contains the centrifugal clutch, and gears to provide hi and low ranges, plus reverse and 4x4.
Pix of a '93 Polaris TrailBoss 250 4x4 2-stroke. Left side shows CVT ("PVT").
Polaris gets credit for early CVT drives in ATVs, as well as switchable 4x4. Switchable 4x4 was not embraced by the Japanese brands fully until around 2000. Full-time 4x4, like I have in my '96 Honda TRX300FW,
is definitely no Bueno.
Well, there's your problem. No cylinder. I've seen pictures of old Polaris ATVs with the **** that I think is to adjust the rear brake, but never seen one IRL. My '97 Sportsman 500 took a hex key to adjust the mechanical foot brake they had back then.
Lotsa dead 2-stroke Polaris ATVs out there. Run out of oil in the tank and this is what you get. They are usually
"free". This is one of the dreaded owner-worked-on-it-first quads.
Hi All,
Not sure if anyone will find this but here are the chain lengths I found on my 1987 Trail boss 4x4.
D2Moto.com also says that this is the correct chain lengths for this model but I couldn't find any confirmation directly from a Polaris source.
