Throttle Body
OPT-
I mentioned having some issues with my idle, and I messed with the throttle position sensor and thought I had it all figured out...it idles great, but tonight when I started it up, it revved pretty high (while in High Range), and I had to stand on the brake pretty hard to keep it from driving into the wall before it killed, and then was fine when I restarted it. Anyways, kinda freaked me out, especially thinking about kids driving it.
I know you said lots of times you ended up replacing them after they had been messed with - and another mechanic I talked to said the dealer he worked at pretty much always replaced them if a customer messed with it, so it got me thinking maybe I need to just get a new (used) throttle body. Are they really that impossible to get set back to factory settings?? Can't figure out why...someone had to set it that way originally?
Are all the throttle bodies with the same PN the same? I know different years had different voltage settings, but as long as its the PN my machine calls for, it will work on my machine, correct?

A lot of times dealer and techs including myself had to replace throttle body assemblies because they had been tampered with so much it wasn't worth our time in messing with them. New throttle bodies with the tps are already pre adjusted at the factory and should NOT be tampered with. Should be a simple hook up and run. If you still have problems then that could be a t-bap wiring or connector problem or a problem in the ecu itself that would need Digital Wrench to sort out. Throttle bodies part numbers vary, but on your 2005 700 XP these atvs/Rangers share the same part number.DON'T buy a used throttle body..

Yes they were originally set by someone. If you'd seen some of the ones we had to deal with you'd understand. Some had the D shaped adjuster all wallowed out from not having the correct adjuster tool, the tps had been moved too far one way or another which would screw up it's internal spring. It was cheaper for dealers to end up chunking throttle bodies for new ones and start fresh rather than to try to spend time on a new tps sensor and hope that they could get the throttle body to act right. The fact that your machine tried to run away with you would be a good reason to start with a new "virgin" one.Like I mentioned also there could be other factors involved also such as a t-bap connector or wiring issue causing problems, but throttle bodies and settings are so sensitive it doesn't take much to render them useless if you're not careful.

You think the runaway machine was a result of the throttle body/TPS rather than something in the ECU/etc? I know its not always the most accurate, but I've never gotten any error codes for the t-bap (and I have gotten one for the TPS before).
I'd hate to replace the throttle body and have that not solve the problem.
Before I touched the TPS, it was still set to the original factory settings, and the original owner of the machine told me that it has idled high for quite a while now. Do they ever get out of adjustment??

I'd still take it to a reputable dealer and let them put it on Digital Wrench. Codes may or may not show up especially on intermittent faults or even possible wiring shorts from the tps or t-bap. Digital Wrench should at least narrow down problems that you can't find on your own or with a meter.

Another question about the TPS - with them all being the same part number (all those different years), how do they come already calibrated for the specific voltage required for that specific year machine, since all the machines require a different voltage? Is the voltage the result of the ECU signal and the TPS at the factory setting? Meaning if you took a 2005 throttle body that was set to .710 and hooked it up to a 2010 machine, the voltage would read .650 (making that number up) or whatever number that specific year required? As long as the TPS and throttle body were still at their factory settings?
Sorry if the wording of that question isnt that clear...

Yes that is a good question as some did have different settings. We checked the final tps setting when we got one in and if it was off from what the manual called for a particular machine, we backed off the idle adjuster to where it wasn't touching the throttle plate cam stop. Then we checked the base setting and reset if needed. Then the final setting with the adjuster. This we were very careful with as we only wanted to touch this one time only. For what ever reason your machine ran wild, whether it's throttle body related,a throttle cable problem or some other electrical problem,it's worth the peace of mind to have Digital Wrench have a go at it.

Where it makes a difference or not we had the Polaris test harness with the 9 volt battery and regulator. It was super sensitive to the slightest movement of the tps which was in most cases very little that we had to move it. A lot of times the only setting we had to make was the final vdc reading as the base setting didn't have to be moved. All that I'm saying is that something caused the machine to run wild. That's reason enough to have it checked out rather than mess with it again. It may be something other than the throttle body or tps and Digital Wrench could probably find it.
