Default electrical glitch

A friend owns a 2002 model Sportsman 500. Recently his headlights, taillight and speedometer light atarted to flash shorlly after starting the bike up.The flashing is apparently similar to signal lights on a car.
He phoned me later and told me the flashing stops if he disconnects either of his low beam headlights.
Has anyone out there experienced this situation before ?

He needs to check the fuses in the waterproof pouches. If I remember correctly it is a 20amp fuse. Somehow water gets into these waterproof pouch and the fuse shorts. I would check all the fuses, I think there are three. Hope this helps. You can take the fuse to a autoparts store and find a replacement that will work.

Owner ran the atv for 15 miles and it worked ok. Took it out a day later and within the half hour the lights started to blink again. He has not disconnected the high beam light. He tells me now that the machine needs to be warmed up for this to happen. Sometimes the bike does not even have to be in motion or started for this to occur. If the machine is warm, shut the engine down and just turn on the key and the kights will blink. Does this sound familiar to anyone ?

I'd bet you have a bad circuit breaker, check your manual for the location. The contacts corrode internally from moisture and the high resistance causes excessive current draw which opens the breaker. It resets when it cools and the process repeats over and over.....

That also is a possibility but the statement he makes about disconnecting one of the headlights and problem stops leads me to think it's the breaker. If it was a wiring short disconnecting the bulb wouldn't affect it....

Hey fellow riders,
How right you were, ended up being circuit breaker under front of machine, left side (sealed pouch) wasn't exactly SEALED! there was serious corrosion and extreme heat ! replaced it and everything is fine! Thanks for the input......check out our riding site nice riding pics and mud bog pics... We staffed and designed the power sports rally mud bog in Lake George NY last Sept.
