Did the same thing on my old 500 scrammy,99 model, you do have to remove both clutches and backing plate of clutch housing to get to the bolt/nut.If i am thinking right both nuts are reverse thread. You have to have a BIG socket to remove them.

I have removed the swingarm at least a dozen times. Here's what you need to do. You haven't mentioned this, but are you planning on taking the rear axle/carrier off? If so, remove the snap rings and soak the aluminum covers that are over top of the axle nuts. Sometimes a little tap here and there with a hammer helps get the covers off. Once they are off soak everything overnight. Be patient so you don't end up stripping anything.

If you don't need to remove the rear carrier, then skip to this. The first thing you want to do is remove the rear wheels to reduce the weight you are dragging around. Now, take off the clutch cover and both clutches. You'll need a special clutch puller to get the front clutch off. The rear clutch should come right off. Next, remove the backing plate of the clutch cover. It only requires the removal of four bolts. Be sure you don't loose the 3 spacers on the rear clutch or that foam piece. Now, all you need to do is break out your muscle power and loosen the two brass colored bolts on either side of the swingarm. At this point dissconnect the rear brakes and unbolt the bottom shock bolt. The whole swingarm should slide off now. When you are ready to put it back on, make sure you use red locktite and crank it as tight as you can. Without locktite, the vibration will cause the bolts to vibrate out.

I forgot to answer your original question about how long it takes. I have done it alot, and it still takes me a good 45-60 minutes or so to do it correctly. I always remove the plastic and wheels too, so that takes a littel extra time. The bottom line is, don't hurry!!!!! It should take you as long as you need to do the job correctly. For a first timer, I'd give myself about 3-4 hours. You'll also need all the right tools. I think the rear bolt is 2.25 inches. Good luck finding a socket that big! DON"T EVEN TRY TO USE VICE GRIPS!!!!!

Thanks for all your input guys. The swingarm is broke and needs to be replaced so I guess I have to remove the rear ax- carrier? Right? Or can I just remove the hub from one side and slide it through? And just one more ? and I should be set. How long does the lock tite need to cure before I start riding? thanks again

It is broke pretty close to where the bolt/ bushing is on the clutch side, we already welded it but, it was hard to grind it down good and get a good bead going. It was a temporary fix to get me through Memorial Day weekend. We ordered up a new stock one, my friend said it looks much beefier than the original stock. He has the same machine as me so when we take it off we will re weld it and beef it up so to have a spare on hand.
