Idle /throttle problems
#1
My Sportsman 400 4x4 is idleing in the front yard as I type this! When I depress the throttle she bogs down. Too rich...too lean? How do I adjust mixture? I have new fuel line filter installed. It has been twenty mins. and still idleing fine. Was hard to start and has no power when depressing throttle. Any ideas?

Check your throttle adjustment. If the ETC is out of adjustment, it will make it cut out and miss like that. If you have a plastic throttle cover, make sure the contacts are not touching, if it is metal they must touch.

Notto Me smart #@@ but is your air cleaner ok? last year i laid a machine on it's side and the oil vent let some oil in the air box the machine ran good for abou 25 miles then I couldn't get above an idle . I put on a new air cleaner after tyring 2 plugs and the machine ran perfect.

The first question I would ask is, was it OK before the fuel filter was installed? If the answer is yes then take out the new filter and reinstall the old one and if that fixes you problem then your new filter is a dud. Please answer this question then we'll move on.

Yes it was in storage! When first trying to start , we discovered dirt debris in the tank.
It would not start! We removed and emptied tank and for $2, thought fuel line filter could only help. I too felt the carb may have had debris or gunk so I dissconnected the clamps removed carb (throttle and choke cable still attached), drained some suspect gas, water from carb, but not sure how to clean jets or exactly what adjustments to make. Air filter has been removed so it should have all the O2 it needs. Oh and when first investigating, battery was dead and pull starter rope broke, so I replaced that, (that was fun!!) Any drawings, pics on line to help? Thanks in advance.

Most quads will not run with the air filter removed, it runs too lean. Not saying this is your problem but I know my SP runs like @#$% without the air filter. If I were you I would be doing a major fuel system cleaning which includes a tare down of the carb. It's been in storage for some time so jets and such will probably be gummed up.
Good luck.
Good luck.
