I've seen several posts on the top speed of the SP700. Lots of people have guessed or paced their quads with cars. I rode my machine on a long, flat paved country road w/ my Garmin Etrex GPS strapped on. I figure this is a good test for the 700 because I only weigh 145#. I let it run at full throttle for at least 1.5 miles, trying to maintain a low profile for aerodynamics. The results: kinda disappointing: 63.8mph. Probably could squeeze 65 out of her if I'd been wearing clothing with less drag & less humid air -- more tire pressure would help too. In fact w/ less aggressive tires and lots of pressure, you could easily top 70? What do you guys think? The machine is an unmodded 02' SP700 w/ 1050 miles (test performed w/ full tank of fuel). I'm thinkin' of adding a heelclicker clutch kit -- I'll test & post again.

Oh yeah -- I'm not sayin' that 63.8 is the exact figure for all 700's -- I would expect 2-3 mph difference from machine to machine.

Did you notice how much speedometer error you had compared to the GPS? I have 28 inch 589s on my 700 and it starts to get squirrely at about 55 with these tires, but if the speedometer is correct and 12% tire size error that would equate to about 62 mph.

 

Why were you disappointed with that speed? It is a utility 4-wheeler - its not built for speed; thats what sport quads are for. Another thing is that the SP700 weighs 740lbs without gas,coolant,etc.

I got 62.8 mph (magellian meridian platinum)on a slight uphill run. I am not hitting the rev-limiter anymore.

I weigh 310# and have a kimpex trunk dragging in the wind, as well as a warn 3.0ci winch and a polaris box on the front rack.

I am running a heelclicker with the stock primary, H/C secondary, and the weights are at 1.2 4.3 5.3.

I used to lose a fair amount of speed on slighrt inclines.....not any more.

I guess I'm not really disappointed. I did not purchase this machine for top speed - it was for torque, suspension, comfort, etc. I guess the only reason that I was disappointed with the results was that it felt more like 67 --- AND the speedo was WAY buried beyond 60 - I just expected more, based on some of the other strings i've read on top speed of the 700 and the position of the needle on the speedo. Most of my riding on the trails is between 35-50 anyway. Good thing is it'll do 50-55 all day long at about 1/2 throttle without even breakin' a sweat. That makes a big difference when your running long open trails.

When I want to go real fast I jump on the YZ250... or the ZR440...

 

I've verified 61.3 on my 600 with a garmin etrex gps. And I weigh 375 if I weigh a pound.

I think a lot of the claimed top speeds that seem high have more to do with speedo error than actually go that fast.

These speeds sound right . I had a 650 Prairie to 64 on the speedo the other day .

We all appreciatte the honest numbers . I have had a few *hundred mile per hour Banshees * that only registered 80 or so on radar .

 

I like the gps mount any chance you could make one for my garmin rino and at what cost,garmin has one for handle bars but i haven't looked at it yet.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif[/img]

 

Sportfish, a good mount is the RAM mount sold @ cabelas. It is basically a ball like a miniature trailer ball that you clamp to your handlebars or rack. Then the GPS mounting bracket quick-attatches to the ball. You use the same ball for other stuff, too, like a spotlight, gun holster bracket, etc. Once the ball is mounted, it takes only 10 seconds to attatch an accessory, and you can swivel it around any way you want it on the ball, then lock it in place.
