Default 01 trailboss starter replacment

need to replace the starter in the trail boss do I have to pull the clutch assembly off to replace it? I have the bolts lose and can't get them all the way out.

No, you should be able to get to everything if you stand the atv on it's back bar or bumper, remove skid plates, then the starter should be easily accessable.

My fault, I am looking at my repair manual at the moment and it doesn't say anything about removing the clutches, but if it is on the same side as the clutches, behind them, then yes you would have to remove them, sorry I assumed that 2 and 4 strokes were the same. OK after looking at my manual, it appears that the starter is behind the front clutch, so yes you would have to pull both clutches and the rear cover to gain access to the starter.
