Painting wheels Black??
#1
I still have the stock wheels on my Xpedition 425 (plain silver metal finish) and I wanted to paint them black. Does anybody have any suggestions on the best way to paint them. What brand of spray paint etc.... I want a good finish that will stay on, no matter what type of weather or abuse they go through.
Will black spray paint keep a decent finish or will this idea not work at all? Just curious, I know it's probably a dumb question but I really like the looks of all black wheels.
Thanks everyone!

Yeah I wouyls get them powder coated. I got mine done for $40 for all four. think you might have to sand blast first though. My powder coat has gotten nicked a few times from rocks, and I ride in the dunes.

I took my wheels to my local tire dealer for info on powder coating. They deal with all the associated companys, (rim rolling and straitening, sand blasting and powdercoating etc). They handle the lot and the best thing is they also remove and then replace the tires for you. (all for a price of course).

I would not waste my time trying to paint steel wheels .They will chip and rust within a few months. Powder coating is the only way to go. It may get chipped but they will not flake off like paint will. There are powder coating shops in almost every major city they are just a little difficult to find. I have two local shops that do my frames ,wheels A arms and every thing imaginable in any color for a good price . PM me if you need it done and I will help you out. All parts must be sandblasted and I can do that to.

If powdercoating is not an option I would use a paint made by Dupont thats called Imron. Its normally used on semi's, firetrucks and other heavy equipment. It will hold up just as good as powdercoating but you'll have to find somebody that knows how to run a spray gun to use it. With Imron you won't have to sandblast them either...just sand them good with a 320 grit and put on a coat of variprime (also made by Dupont) and then paint them. Find a bodyshop in your area that sprays Dupont paint and talk to them about it. It won't cost as much as you might think, if you do alot of the prep work yourself and basically take them the rims ready to paint.
