Default Polaris 500/HO

2001 polaris 500 ho. I'm having trouble figuring out what's wrong with my engine, as it ran great and now it misses. Starts and idles great then when you crack the throttle it misses really bad. I pulled and cleaned the carb and drained all the gas lines and tank, as I thought it might be bad gas or something in the carb. Ran the engine and seemed like it was ok. Drove for about 10 minutes and then it started missing when I cracked the throtlle to get some quick power. Then it got continuously worse and now miss'es when you just give it 1/2 throttle. Something tells me there is a ignition modular that might be bad. (just guessing) I have no manual for it yet. So I was hoping some of you could throw some ideas, or might even know exactly whats wrong......The engine has little time on it, ?400hrs or so...............JOHN

For starters I'd check the colour of the spark plug, if it's white or grey it's too lean whick might indicate an air leak between the carb and cylindar. Another possiblility is rev limiter problems.

Check the adjustment of the throttle cable (about 6 inches from the thumb throttle). This is a simple adjustment that can make one run badly.

I agree with Weedy, the ETC is probably out of adjustment.

I had that same problem with my 2001 HO and took it to the dealier and they had to replace the stator. the part was $225.00 but the dealier ran it under warranty.

If it idle's ok but doesn't run a under load it's starving for either gas or spark. If your satisfied it's not a carb problem like a stuck float or clogged jet - try replacing the plug. if all that checks out you may want to explore the posibility of a CDI problem. I've had that problem on a few trucks over the years - weak coil, I'm not sure how closely that theory would apply here.
