Key replacement
#1
I lost a key to my quad and called the dealer to inquire about a replacement. He wants $5-$6 for a blank that I can carry to someone with a key machine and have it cut. Is there a way to get a replacement key by the number stamped on it? Does anyone know if someone else other than a dealer carries blanks? Seems awfully expensive for a blank! Any suggestions?

I know of no other way to obtain a blank. I'm sure a good locksmith could however. I show blanks list for $4.50. Hardly worth driving around trying to find one that works. Polaris says if you don't have one to copy you need to buy a new switch, again I think a locksmith could make one. Good luck BIll

Bill,
It's not so much the price, it's the principle. Just because they have a captive audience they think they can charge through the roof, key blanks should be $1 or less. Case in point, the Ertl Sportsman Replica in the Polaris catalog for $54.99. You can buy them at Toys R Us for between $10 and $15. I think Polaris is just gouging it's customers, because they can! The good ole American Way! Just my .02 worth!

The model listed in the catalog is a serial numbered collectors edition. Still high priced. They offer other models in the 11 dollar range that aren't listed. Will have to agree some parts are outragious. Check some parts prices for the electric starter. It'll floor ya!

I lost the key to my Sport. I still had the extra but thought I should nip it in the bud. So, I went to my local dealer and asked for four copies, you never know. I thought $5 was kinda steep, you just spent $4800 on a quad, another $200 on accessories, and they charge you for extra keys, I just thought that was kinda low.

Bad2bone,
I hear ya. I forsaw the problem at the time I bought my '98. I had the dealer throw in 2 spare blanks. You guessed it, they are still blank! Guess I should get around to cutting them just in case.
I am upset that you can't seem to get the rubber boot for the spare keys that the original key has.

I took my keys in to a hardware store, and after 15 minutes carefully comparing my keys to their blanks...
I made a few cheap copies that worked tolerably...especially as spares. No exact matches, the depth nub is missing on these, but, they work. Spares.

You think that is bad two weekend past and a friend lost the key to a yamaslob oopps gonna get flamed for that one !!!! The dealer said that he could get a new key but the cost was like 13 Dollars and it would take three weeks to get it a real rip off. Glad he does not need the quad.
