Scrambler Questions
#1
I have a 2000 Scambler 500 4x4 and have a couple of questions:
The easy one -- I backed my quad out of the garage today and noticed, laying on the floor, was a long hose. It was the hose that normally hangs down form the bottom of my quad. I believe this is the vent hose for the carburator. Is this correct? If so, what is the proper routing to get it from the Carb through the frame? The service manual says it must be routed correctly but does not tell you wahat that routing is. If not, what is the hose?
The hard one -- I chewed thru a couple of drive belts in the last couple of months. The first was the origianl belt and it lasted 3 years - no complaints there. When it broke, I replaced it and the new one only lasted for maybe 20 hours. The dealer said it was most likely a bad belt, for some reason, I just don't believe that - any other ideas why it ripped apart so quickly?
Thanks for your help!

The routing should just be so that the hose in not kinked. As for your belt it you may need to shim it out so that the belt will wear and fit properly. Your dealer should be able to help you in explaining this better.

Thanks for the insight - my local dealer is of no use. I asked him if there was anything to adjust with respect to the belt - and he said no. I am finding this is definitely not the case.

I smoked my stock belt finally after 5 years and I just bought an HPD belt. It came with a shim. I have never called the guy at hpd but I have heard they are very helpful and curtious. Their website is www.hpd-inc.com.

On the top side of the battery toward the front of your ATV, there is a vent for that hose to connect to. Stick it on and route it down the frame to the underside of the ATV.
