I had a 99 450s.I just sold it and went to a 2000 sp500 .Speaking from experience the sportsman will out perform the 450 in the mud and especially in the snow{my brother had to break trail for me all last year }Im real happy with the 500SP

Well the ups is true 4 wheel drive, disc brakes, IRS suspension, 2 to 4 wheel drive switch, great ground clearance almost a foot, water cooled, biggest plushiest seat on the market for riding 2, holds over 5 gal. of fuel, good light system.
And now the downside sits kinda high feels unsteady on steep climbs till you get used to it, some people have had trouble with the disc brakes and tie rod ends wearing but Polaris has replaced them with a newer design, stock tires s#ck, has to greased but I really don't find this a problem if anything a plus, ignorant any post from sledder he only makes dum remarks and doesn't even own an atv.

I have a SP335 and it easily outperforms a Foreman in the mud. I was going through mud with stock tires that the guys on Foremans wouldn't even try. The one who did try (with Bear Claws) got stuck right after I went through. And this is a SP335! The SP500 will run circles around a 450 on the trail, in the mud or anywhere else. The only edge I give the Honda is in PROVEN RELIABILITY. This is not to say that the Polaris is unreliable, (I haven't had a single thing go wrong with mine) just that Honda has a long track record of reliability. Bottom line is it is up to you but the SP500 will outperform the 450 easily.

I can tell you it's the most comfortable ride you'll ever have. I ride the trails up north in Ontario every weekend and so far it seems to be unstoppable. We went with a group who were not from our area and my good old sportman pulled each and everyone of them out.
Be sure to get a winch, you'll be pulling alot of your buddies out.!!!

Sportsman plus?
1.Ground clearance
2.Liquid cooled vs air cooled
3.AWD system will deleiver wheel spin to all 4 wheels instead of three
4.Finest casual trail riding quad currently on todays 4x4 market
5.Switchable 2wd-4wd
6.Disk brakes
7.I.R.S
Down side to the Sportsman?
1.It's weight of 697lbs can sometimes hamper you in very tight/winding situations.
2.Tie rod ends break easily, but there is a fix for this problem
Quad for quad,in my opionion, the 450S is NO match for the bigger more powerful 500cc Sportsman.I have drag raced my friend Pauls 450s and beat him in every phase of the race.I have mudded against the 450S as well. They dont do as well in the serious mud/snow as the Sportsman either. The Sportsman is one great work horse to,just be sure to use low range when towing/hill climbing/or in deep mud.Like Sledder said earlier, there just are no ups and downs to the Sportsman,at least not when compared to the 450s anyways.[lol]====BILL
