Default plastic bushings?!

my brother rolled my trailboss over the other day, and bent the steering stem. i ordered a new one and the top bushing for it. i took the old stem off the other day, and, to my surprise, PLASTIC BUSHINGS that were all worn out. (already second set of bushings, getting ready to put in 3rd)
why the heck use plactic? why not a bearing\steel one normally found on most quads?

Hot Seat sells an aftermarket HD upper steering bushing for the Sport/Scrambler line. You can maybe check with them to see if it's applicable to your's.

Cant remember what brand it was when I replaced mine, but the lower was made of aluminum. Been so long I've completely forgotten.
