Default Polaris 700 engaging question

My friend just bought a '02 700 Sportsman and I curious to know if upon take off, at what RPM should the belt/clutch should be engage and start turning the wheels. Seem like he has to rev it maybe 1000-1500 rpms above idle for it to engage. My P650 is instant engaging at any RPM about idle in comparison.

Is this typical for Polaris or is something out of whack?

Default Polaris 700 engaging question

Actually upon further reseach, I think the lag is due to the clutch kit that was installed by the previous owner to turn big tires. Does that sound right? Would changing the springs smooth out the take off?
