Default '96 6X6 shifter question...

I'm helping a friend with his '96 Polaris 6X6. He was having a problem with it poping out of gear when in Hi. No problem with low or reverse. I started adjusting the shift rod and got it holding in Hi, then it was poping out of Reverse! I can adjust it to hold rev OR Hi, but not both. There is no play in the shifter link bushings(at each end of the shifter rod). The shift lever has a very small amount of play, so small in fact that i don't think it is causing the problem(the top of the lever moves around 1/4"). I also checked to see if the bolt was tight at the top of the shifter rod where it goes down into the tranny as i've seen this work loose and cause some play. Its tight as well. Does anyone have any ideas? It does go into reverse, but if there is a slight incline or any load at all, it'll pop out. Its not the reverse gears itself, because i can adjust the shifter rod to allow it to enguage more and it stays fine(then it pops outa Hi).

Any help is appreciated!

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

Check the oil in the shifter it could be dry or gummed up.
