* WILD ALERT
* Thursday, May 25, 2000
**************************

Dear WildAlert Subscriber,

In this issue:
1. NEW RELEASE:America's Most Endangered Wildlands, 2000
2. WASHINGTON REPORT for the week of May 22 is now online.
************************************************** *******
1. MOST ENDANGERED WILDLANDS, 2000
Dirt bikes, dune buggies and other off-road vehicles (ORVs) present one
of
the fastest growing threats to America's wilderness according to The
Wilderness Society's just-released annual list of the "15 Most
Endangered
Wildlands" report. Read more about the report, its findings, and ways
you
can take action at http://www.wilderness.org/newsroom/15most/index.htm?b

NOT MUCH OF A VACATION
"Many outdoor vacations this Memorial Day weekend and throughout the
summer
will be less enjoyable because of the pollution, noise and destruction
caused by the use of dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles," said
William
H. Meadows, president of TWS. "A recent national survey of American
voters
reveals that the vast majority-79 percent-support limiting the use of
off-road vehicles to designated routes. It's time to turn this
environmental threat around before it spirals out of control."

The annual report provides Americans with a regular status report about
the
condition of our wildlands. This year's report identifies serious
problems
that continue to threaten the nation's lands. The misuse of dirt bikes
and
other ORVs is one of the fastest growing threats. Other significant
environmental problems listed in the report are logging, grazing, water
diversion, invasive weeds, mining, mismanaged recreation, noise
pollution,
oil and gas development, and road building.

THE LIST
The 15 most endangered wildlands in this year's report (listed in
alphabetical order by the state within which they are located):
AK - Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
AK - Copper River Delta
AK - Denali National Park and Preserve
AZ - Grand Canyon National Park
AZ - Sonoran Desert/Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge
CA - Sierra Nevada
CA and OR - Klamath Basin
CO - White River National Forest
ID and OR - Hells Canyon National Recreation Area
ME - Maine's North Woods
ND - Little Missouri National Grasslands
UT - Utah Wilderness
VA - High ****, Jefferson National Forest
WA - Cascade Crest
WY, MT, and ID - Greater Yellowstone

CONSERVATION LEGISLATION
The good news is that legislation pending before the Senate (S. 2123)
would
dramatically increase federal funding of conservation and recreation
projects nationwide (Senate version of "CARA" bill just passed by the
House). So, as you head out to enjoy our national parks, forests, and
other open spaces this Memorial Day weekend, we urge you to call or
send
letters to your U.S. senators telling them to support this legislation.

OTHER TOOLS
The Wilderness Society also strongly endorses another solution for
saving
America's endangered wildlands: the Antiquities Act. Under the 1906
statute, President Clinton can designate some of the lands listed in
the
"15 Most Endangered Wildlands Report" as national monuments.
Designation
would provide greater protective status for special historic and
scientifically significant lands.

To combat the threat posed by dirt bikes, snowmobiles and the like, TWS
has
launched a nationwide campaign calling for the protection of U.S.
national
lands from the destruction caused by these machines. TWS applauded the
Park Service for recently taking an important first step by
recommending a
ban on snowmobiles and personal motorized watercraft in most national
parks.

"People aren't allowed to tear across their neighbors' lawns or city
parks," said Jerry Greenberg, director of the TWS off-road vehicle
campaign. "They shouldn't be allowed to rip up public lands that
belong to
all Americans, especially when there are hundreds of thousands of miles
of
routes on America's public lands that are already open for use by dirt
bikes and other ORVs."

Boy, these people want EVERYTHING banned form EVERYWHERE it seems like.

I want to know where they got the results from that survey. The one that said 79% of people want OHV restricted? From the national poll I read in Weekend last week, it was completely different. 78% for NOT banning them, and 22% for banning them.

Isn't it sad cartman it is alright to remove the top of a mountain but lord don't let an atv ride through a mudhole and kill a frog, or accidentally ride over a seedling tree. It is just down right d#m rediculous, one thing about though with the Hatfield McCoy trail coming in at least WV will atvpro on the subject so take that you d#m tree huggers. I am seriously thinking on taking a job on the trail as a ranger especially if my retirement transfer, we can draw a full retirement in 20 years because of it being a high stress job. When you going to trailer your atv down here and ride some with me you are just about an hour drive from me...

Well I grieve for you Americans I know Canada is not perfect by any means but at least we do not have them goddamn treehuggers where I live at least not as bad as down there but if there is anything I can do to help I try to do I voted for not banning atv's from parks on the poll they had on the net I do not know if it counted but I did it anyway.
Good luck in your struggles with these moronic people I have read some of the stuff they do and I find it down right appauling.
Do not get me wrong I love nature and beleive there should be conservation but the vast majority of ATV'ers are very nature orientated people and do not litter.
I Know these treehuggers are taking it to extremes the guerella warfare tactics they use from what I have read what they do I have not experinced their practices first hand and hope I never do I am sure they must of killed a few people with stringing wires across trails digging holes ect. Chickenman (corncob)(cob)had some links one time that had some of the tactics that they use and it disgusted me.
Well I hope you all win in your struggle with them and will vote on polls to ensure our freedom to ride and am sure most of my fellow Canadians will do the same. GOOD LUCK

Have a good one

Thanks for bringing this out in the open. The biggest thing we can do this year is vote. Remember way back, 7 years ago before the liberals took over. This crap was not happening. The damn liberals have taken over from the White House on down and are trying to reck this country. If Al Gore and Hillary Clinton get elected, this country is in for another world of hurt. I cannot do much as far as Hillary goes, but I damn for sure will not vote Al Gore. I usually do not get on a political soapbox, but I am going to stay on one this year. I love to hunt, shoot, and ride and you can bet Al Gore wants to take all three away.

All these treehuggers make me so mad! Too bad I am only 16 and can't vote yet, but I still am helping. My dad had his mind made up that he was going to vote for Gore until I told him about some of the things that he wants to do. Now he is voting for Bush and so is mom. If Gore wins, we are in for a fight!
