barrings or cv joint
#1
i need to know quick on what this is. I can take the rear left half shaft(I guess, the shaft the goes from the gearcase to the wheel) and shake it and the piece of metal(looks like a sleeve) that the top cv joint is in and move it alot more the on the other side. I need to know if it is a barring or a cv joint. Also how do you get the cv joint out of the sleeve or the sleeve off of the gearcase. Please respond if you can help. thanks.

The inner cv is supposed to slide in and out to compensate for the wheels vertical movement. The sleeve you mention is part of the cv. On the other hand if you have up and down movement the cv is probably shot. To remove the cv from the gearbox you must first remove the wheel then remove the axle nut followed by the wheel hub. Remove the bolts holding the aluminum bearing carrier and remove it. Now the 1/2 shaft should be hanging free and according to P you give it a sharp tug and out it comes. In reality most have a little rust in the splines and therefore not so easy to remove. Try giving it a sharp tug or 2 or 3 and if that fails you can try using a couple of pry bars 180 deg apart and carefully move it side to side until it pops out. Be aware, you are prying against the aluminum gearbox so take care not to crack it.
Hope this is what your looking for.

so there is no kind of clip or o-ring or anything holding it in. I have everything taken off that you said and it will slide like it should untill it gets to a certain point and stops. How hard is it to put one back in if it the this hard to take out.

There is a snap ring on the end of the splined shaft that holds it in and assuming there is no rust or crud in the splines a sharp hard pull will pop it out. Putting it back in is the easy part, just line up the splines and give the end of the 1/2 shaft a firm tap with a dead hammer or a 2x4.
If you wish I can send you a pic from my manual that displays the splines and snap ring.

Also does the sleeve I was talking about come off of the gearcase or does the 1/2 shaft come off at the splined end. thanks
