Default 600 Sportsman Idle

Hello motorist..

I have an 03 Sportsman with 120 miles on it and it wont idle. It will run but you have to hold the throttle a little to keep it running. It is going in for its first service next week.. Does anyone know whats up?

Thanks,

Hank

Theres a thumbscrew on the bottom of the carb. Adjust as needed. I turn the idle up a bit in the winter, helps her warm up faster then back it down when shes warm.

That was happening to mine last winter after I bought my '03. As soon as I let off the throttle, it would shut off. If I just kept a tiny bit of pressure on the throttle, but without revving it, it would stay running. So what I did was took off the throttle cover on the right side of the handlebars (just lifts off), that exposed the contacts for the safety shut off. I slid a little rubber carb vaccuum plug over the round plastic piece that touched the handle when the contacts are touching, confusing huh? Basically, if you can somehow make so that those contacts are not touching at idle, then your problem is solved. You'll see what i'm talking about when you take the cover off. It's a very easy fix.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help.. are you happy with your 600. I thought it would have more power. I know I only have 100 miles on it and I am waiting for it to WAKE UP. I know it is not a sport machine.. I just want an occasional wheelie..

I know what you mean, but have you ever tried to lift the front end off of the ground? It's REALLY heavy. I can get a wheelie on asphalt in Low range, but the combination of soft rear suspension, heavy front, and low rpm engaging clutch sort of prevent it. I'm not that worried about a wheelie, but I heard that if you tighten the adjustment on the rear springs a couple clicks that it's easier to pop a wheelie; it stiffens the rear suspension. You really need a special tool to do it though. Ours doesn't come with it but the Scramblers do.
I do ride a wheelie after hopping a hill though. Once you do get the front end off the ground it's easy to keep it there.

I'm extremely happy with my 600 though. Check out the post that is titled sp600 vs Grizz drag. I posted a story about me and my neighbor on his Grizz. You'll get a kick out of it. I'm waiting for a RED primary spring (from EPI) for my clutch that is supposed to really help with accerlation, my Polaris dealership mechanic told me. We'll see and I'll keep you posted.

There's a cable adjustment for the throttle try adjusting that out first.
