I have heard about a 1999 sportsman 500 having 28,000 miles on it. This was in the ATV Time form people could not belive it. It was at a dealer were someone had traded it in on another 500 with HO. The man that had it road on trails never dogged it and always keeped up with his oil changes and things. Only had one problem they said, it needed a spark plug. Now I don't know how true that story is, but the person that saw it and talked to the dealer about it is a very good person for giving true information. His name on the form is MaineMudder#3 you may know of him on the forms. I myself think he is telling the truth, due to his posts in the past.

Seen many, many Sportsmans with 10,000+ miles on them without rebuilds. Barring abuse or neglect, the engines really seem to hold up as well as anything out there. Brother in law has over 15,000 on his Sportsman 500 (non-HO). Except for a small batch of bad camshafts a few years ago, they really are a trouble-free engine.

Neighbor runs Big Bears on their ranch, and they have no complaints with them @ (I am guessing based on what they had a little while back) 5500 or so miles.
As for the popping noise, it is pretty common on the Sportsmans.
