Default Flywheel lightening question.

Do the four stroke motors benifit from lightening the flywheels? In particular Scrambler 500's. I know in cars they use lighter harmonic balancers etc. to keep the rotating mass down. Will it help our quads?

I'd give HPD a call. They'll tell you if it's worth doing or not.

How about Rick Ritter? Do you have any input here?

Default Flywheel lightening question.

It always works well on the 2 strokes, but it actually wors worse on a four stroke 500 ho motor.I'm not exactly sure why,but we did try it and 400 ft drag perf was worse.

Default Flywheel lightening question.

It is a simple rotational inertia problem. If it did not work for someone, it was not done correctly - period. It is possible but not likely that the ignition or carburation could not keep up with the reduction in rotational inertia (increased acdeleration) of the crankshaft.

All of the four stroke dirt bikes from all of the manufacturers use light flywheels on the MX version and heavy flywheels for the cross country and enduro versions.

If you want more acceleration off the line, a light flywheel will make a difference. Beware - a light flywheel makes the bike easier to stall.

Default Flywheel lightening question.

I am familiar with the effects.I have had RMX and RM dirt bikes, etc. I know about the different gear spreads and flywheel mass etc.I am simply stating that when we lightened the flywheel on this model it did not help.We reclutched and changed a few thing and there was always a ..better here, worse there thing. There was nothing to be substantially better anywhere, and the nays outweighed the yeahs on this one....This was contrary to what we had always found on many other models. Feel free to cut one and give it a try,it may work well for you,I was just sharing info.

I would assume that if it worked well and was worth the expense, then someone would be offering a service for it. I don't see anyone offering flywheel lightening for the 500. Just my $.02
