Trail Mod with stock carb
#1
Anyone have this and like it? The power is good in some areas and not in others. The throttle response isn't very good. Just dissapointed I guess.

My cousin has basically the same setup as you. He has the full trail kit from HPD. All I know is when I get on it after riding my stock- trail piped 4by4. It feels real nice. But his bike is lighter. What did you do to ur airbox?? Will water get in it?

I just recently put a clamp on type K&N caue I got tired of taking the airbox in and out in and out in and out when I was jetting it. I like the clamp on lots better. I cut the whole front of the airbox out along with the seperater wall insided the box. If I go somewhere there is water I just slip the snorkle on and it covers the whole up.

Shawn, my wife's is the full trail mod with the stock carb. I did my own clutching on the primary and liked it alot. It engages medium and pulls out nicely. If you want to try it, get an OEM Polaris brown spring and put your s-55 stock weights back in it. The response of the stock carb will not be as good as the flatslide PWK carb, but they still work pretty good to me.

My wifes bike just has the HPD pipe and fmf silencer with just a plain primary and it works great. The throttle response is fantastic on my wifes bike just like mine was before I had all the work done on it. I just can't figure if it has to do with the porting or if it's the carb. So bubba do you think that it is clutch related due to the red/yellow primary being stiffer and taking more time to engage? WOT is great it's just when you have it pinned for 4 or 5 secs and get off and right back on it bogs somewhat and then picks back up and goes. Off the line it's got great throttle response it's just off and right back on when it acts up. I've gone up and down on mains, up and down on the needle to no avail. I got the Team Secondary thinking it may have been a backshift problem but can put the stocker back on and it does the same thing.! Arrgg.

Keep in mind that a carb is only a machined body and other than jetting a clog or obstruction can be your only culprit. Reeds can cause bogging like that but usually will give off idle response problems as well. My wife's R had problems I couldnt figure out once and it ended up being reeds. Doesnt hurt to check them. I cant see where a port job, even a pretty poor trail port job would be causing those kind of problems, and I also wouldnt even double guess Rick on his work either. You know you can get a PWK or even a PJ Keihin pretty cheap direct for around $150. The ones from HPD are made for the airbox, but you dont have to have those. Even a good used 34 flatslide would be a good choice.

In no way was I referring to a poor port job by Rick! I just thought that it would have different power characteristics than my wifes stock motor. The mechanic/dealer said that my bike is the strongest running 400 he's ever ridden! And he does 400 port jobs too. I wasn't aware that you could get a 39 pwk for 150.00. I don't want it for the airbox anyway. I like the clamp on filter better since I ride mainly in sand and not too worried about water.
