EBS Conversion
I've been toying around with the idea of converting my SP400 to EBS.
The only differences I can find are the clutches and the belt. Can this be done?
Also does the Driven Clutch have anything to do with the way EBS works or can you get away with just the Drive clutch and belt??
But then I don't understand the belt differences, because I have a "ribbed" 700 belt on the SP400 now and there is no EBS on the SP400 and the belt works just fine.

You would prabably be better off putting a clutch kit in that would hold your belt more.
The EBS will draw about 10-15% of your power, I was told from Polaris. The grooved belt is for the EBS, and it can be used on any Polaris without EBS. The grooves are for the EBS clutch to grab onto and hold back.

IS your sportsman 2 stroke or 4? There is not enough deceleration compression on a two stroke for engine braking. They ramp up and continue burning excess gas for too long. The 400 4 stroke work well with EBS. Polaris even has a buy back program because so many owners wanted EBS on them. It is only good on new 400s. THey buy your clutches and you get the EBS ones for around $150. AAN sells a Scrambler secondary with their roller action kit as an upgrade for the Sportman EBS. They say it makes EBS work better and the Scrambler is not an EBS machine.

I should have mentioned that if it is a 2 stroke, a roller action kit goes a long way in slowing the motor down on decelleration. I think it is the closest to EBS they can come. It was very nice on they Xplorer 250 I have. The only reason I took it off was to put it on my Scrambler. When I get enough money I will put it back on the Xplorer.

Sorry, been out of pocket ---
Its a '96 SP400 2 stroke -
Fishslab, I've looked at Aaen and have not found the roller action secondary - is this built like the roller on the early EBS secondary that had the buttons with the addition of a tapered roller, or more like 600/700 EBS secondary where the buttons are totally replaced with a tapered roller?

Quadwrench here is a link to the page for the roller action kit. You just put the kit on the secondary. It replaces the helix and buttons. Aaen clutch parts.

No wonder I didn't find it - never thought to look under "accessories".
I might just have to add that to my Xmas "wish/want really bad - Honey, would you PLEASE" list.
Did you install yours yourself, or had someone do it - if you did it, what did it take to complete??
What do the different degreed Helix's accomplish?

I did mine myself. Very tough for one person, but not imposible. Requires lots of hand strength to hold the sheaves together while the spring is compressed and twisted 1/3 turn with one hand while you try to put the snap ring in with the other. (with out shooting the snap ring across the room--yes I did shoot it once) Two people can do it pretty easy or if you have a Polaris mechanic buddy with a secondary clutch spring compressor tool very easy. Once the clutch is off it is pretty easy if you fallow suplied instructions. The main thing is the sheaves want to spin 1/3 turn when they come apart and must be returned 1/3 when assembling. This must be done in the corect direction. Iwent the wrong direction twice even though I knew which way. LOts of head scratching for awhile. The helixes come in diferent anglesfor varying upshifts and backshifts. If you get one I'll help you out somehow.
