What trans fluid
#1
I picked up a 99 scrambler 500. I am going threw it and changing all the fluids. I put some ATF type F into the hubs, syn gear oil into the front gear box, syn 10w/30 into the motor. I was wondering what goes into the tranny? The manual doesnt say what weight or type of oil, when I drained it it seemed like motor oil didnt smell like gear oil at all....Can I just put in some 20/50 motor oil in it or should I put in actuall gear oil??? Dont want to go with the polaris brand stuff.

The recommended motor viscocity is 0w-40 syn. As cold as it gets in Conneticut I would stick with that. You risk wrecking you cam and valves if not. Not sure of the grade for the tranny. It is a chain and gear driven unit. You should stick with the Polaris stuff or Amsoil chaincase lube for it.

Polaris's tranny oil is a little confusing on the label. It says "ATV Gear Case Oil" on it. Maybe that's only confusing to me. But if you go to the store looking for "Polaris ATV Transmission Fluid" you won't find it, unless they have changed the label since Thanksgiving.

Doh! When I changed the motor oil and filter I put Amsoil 10/30 syn into it...think it will be ok or should i dump it? For the trans ill look for the s 2000 oil for it. Also i just wanted to say this bike is awsome it goes anywere my buddies grizlys go, and then some while there going around all the mud and rocks, im going thew it. There to scared to bash up there $7k machines. I only paid $2500 for this bike and it is awsome.... Stock for now except for the titan 489 XT tires. I have a white clutch spring on order too.

Sometimes w/ all the name changes, it's easier to just refer to the part numbers. Also, get yourself a service manual. By the sounds of it, you don't mind doing your own work, those books can really take some "mysteries" out of these machines. Take care of them, and they'll be there to take care of you.
