Overheated now wont start

OK, I am at the point of re-assembly. I tried putting one of the new rings into the cylinder to measure the ring gap. I the put the piston (with no rings on it) into the cylinder to make sure the ring was straight. The gap was about .045. Is this too much? It is a wiseco piston (std size) in a std bore cylinder. If it is too much what is the worste that will happen? Lower compression? little less power and life? Or will it be a catastrophe? I am guessing it will run ok but it will have less compression. Please let me know if I am wrong...
BTW the book says .025 and the wiseco instructions say no less then .015 (but say nothing about a max).
Thanks
Jarrod

Worst that will happen is lower the compression. Resulting in hard starting and lower power. You may not be able to get it to idle if the gap is to large also. I don't have the specs here so I can't help ya out on the measurments. Jay

Just to give yall an update I put it all together and low and behold it actually started and ran perfect. I have about 120 lbs compression now (that is with .050 ring gap clearance) and it idles just fine. I have checked the injector and everything is working to spec. I am going to run a full tank of gas (mixed 40:1) as the book says and then sell it to get the 4-stroker. I like the polaris just not the 2-stroke.
I want to thank all of you for your help , patience and pompt replies throughout my learning process. Its like having dad next to me....
