Need help with tach installation on scrambler 400
#1
I bought a sunpro analog tach from autozone and hooked it up on my scrambler. I wired black to ground, red to a red/white wire that was hot with the ignition switch on, white to the lights and green to the yellow/red wire coming off the stator. I have the switch on the tach set to 4 cylinder. When I turn the key on the tach needle jumps to 0 but when I start the engine the tach doesn't move. Have I done something wrong??

Anyone have any ideas? I believe this is the same tach that some of you have on your scramblers. I did play around with it and took the green wire off of the red/white wire and hooked it up to another wire coming off the stator. It was a yellow or yellow/brown wire and the tach started to read but it read 3500 rpm at idle. Any help at all would be appreciated.
Thanks

I had the same trouble hooking mine up this summer, I think my trouble was in the grounding. Ill look at it tomorow and if no one has answerd your question, ill try and help.

A regular tach will work with a single cyl 2-stroke. In the 4-cyl setting you have one cyl per cycle. It works out great. I did have the black to a good chassis ground, red to ign. on, white to the lights, and green either the yellow, or yellow/red. Now I see that you have both a 4-stroke and a 2-stroke Polaris. The tach will not work on a 4-stroke, those require a 6 pulse tach instead of the 2 pulse tach for the 2-strokes. In other words it must be made for a 4-stroke motor. Bubba

The tach is on my 2 stroke 400 scrambler. I actually don't even have the 500 anymore. I sold it a few months ago
