sp700 front gearcase oil
#1
Well I changed my front gearcase oil this past weekend and with the polaris dealer an hour away I just ran downto autozone and got some gear oil I know its not the same but didnt think it would hurt anything well with it being cold out the 4wheel drive would ingage on its own.Dose anyone know of a good light weight oil that can be used other than the polaris oil?

I don't think it will hurt the hub/front clutch, but the Polaris brand hub fluid is equivalent to automatic transmission fluid. The 600 and 700 Sportsman do not use the traditional ring/pinon gears that you are used to and that is why it does not need 80-90w gear oil. I would reccomend using a quality synthetic automatic trans fluid or getting the Polaris brand.

The oil I put in it was full synthentic gear oil and its way to thick and as far as the polaris brand it will be a few weeks till I get back to the dealer but I did call up there today and was told transmission fluid would be ok so thats what il use till I get back to the dealer....

It looks like you have already figured it out, but the polaris machines with the centralized hilliard (600/700 and all new sportmans) require the polaris hub fluid, which is, as mentioned above, equivalent to Type F automatic transmission fluid. Service manual even says so. The quads equipped with the outboard hubs require the polaris oil that is equivalent to 80/90 gear oil. The gear oil will cause the 4wd on centralized hilliards to stay engaged.

Whoa, what are we talking about hub oil or gear oil ? I use synthetic ATF for hub oil because it is cheap(I change it 4 or 5 times a year) and it seams to cause less hub sticking than stock. I use 80/90 in the front diff.

Highwayman, if you ride a quad that has a hub on the end of each axle, you are using the correct fluids. Once Polaris moved the hilliard clutch from the wheels to the front case, the font case began requiring the same fluid that the outboard hubs does. The only place that takes 80/90 gear oil on the machines with the hilliard located inside the front case is the rear case.

Just to avoid any confusion. All the twins need to use premium hub fluid in the front gearcase. You can substitute this with ATF Type F synthetic available at Walmart under the Mobil 1 brand name. Gear oil will definatly lead to unwanted engagement of the front wheels and must not be used.

Yes, all the twins, as well as the ATP, the newer Magnums, and the new Sportsmans all have had the locking mechanism moved to the front gearcase. This requires either synthetic type F ATF or Polaris Hub oil.
