Tough Decision - Xplorer 400 or Scrammy 400?
#1
I have an awesome '99 Xplorer 400 4x4. But, I have always liked the Scrambler 400 4x4 and have dibs on a 2000 model. Here is what I need: Be able to beat a Scrambler 500 4x4, be able to do a wheelie, go faster than a Xplorer 400, good handling, good mods available.
Do I already have the machine I need with the Xplorer?? What are the benefits of the Scrambler 400 4x4 over the Xplorer 400? I am assuming the gearing and clutching of the Scrammy is better for acceleration and top speed than the Xplorer. As well, I assume the handling is better and the machine is lighter.
My other longer term plan is to have the Scrammy 400 4x4 for my trail riding and snow machine and then later, get a Sportsman 600 or 700 for utility. I figure I should replace the Xplorer now, while Scrammy 400 4x4's are still available. Also, does anyone know what the last year for the Scrammy 400 4x4 was? I think it was '02?
Thanks- Dave

Technically the last year for the 400 scrambler 4x4 was 2000.
There was not a 2001 model 400 4x4.
The Blue 2002 Polaris Scrambler X was the same bike but a Limited edition. If you can find one this was the last 400 4x4 scrambler.
As for you delima of Explore vs Scrambler.
I belive there are more DIRECT mods to fit the scrambler. Your main loss would be the utility side, No low range also witch I know alot of people wish they had.

You can do any mod to the Explorer that you can do to the Scrambler. The main thing I have seen is the Scrammy will cover you with mud and the other wont. The Scrammy does handle better but ytou give up some ground clearance.Do like I did keep the old one and add a Scrammy to the stable

There used to be someone here on the forums that had a sweet 400 explorer.
They got yellow plastic and removed all the racks. They had a moddifid full HPD race mod on it and it looked to kick @$$. The only thing is the explorer doesn't have the suspension travel that the scramblers have.
