I had the same problem on my 02 sportsman 400. Turns out it was the spring that goes around the cage roller in the front hub was fatigued.

I just bought a 2004.5 700 EFI I noticed it did the same thing you're talking about when I was riding in the snow and turning. My friend who is a mechanic at a dealership told me it happens because the front shaft is always turning even when its not in 4x4 and when you are spinning the rear tires the front shaft spins so fast the springs in the front hub give way to centrifugal force and engage the front axles. He has seen one machine that blew the front end apart. The person told him they were doing donuts in 2 wheel drive when it happened.
