'slapping' sound in belt housing
#1
My wife has a 2002 Scrambler 2X4 that is all stock. She was on a trail ride a while ago and she said she heard a banging noise from the bike (couldn't describe it any better than that, but thats a woman for you). I drove the bike and when you are costing to a stop with or without the brake on, there is a slapping/banging noise from under the belt cover at a very slow speed but goes away just before the bike stops. If you keep your thumb on the throttle just a little as you slow down, the noise isn't there. I pulled the belt cover and saw a belt mark on the bottom of the cover between the front and back pulleys which didn't look to bad since there was no plastic "dug" out, but on the top inside, just behind the vent hole there is a small ridge that runs side to side (damn this guy talks alot) that does have some plastic "dug" out of it. I looked at the belt and there is a few places on the back side of it where there is a bump that could cause a slapping noise when it hits that ridge. Has anyone heard anything like this? Why would it start all of a sudden? Should I just sand the plastic ridge flat?
Disclaimer: The crack about women was directed at my wife since she thinks I should be able to fix it from her very vague drescription of the problem, and its somehow my fault also that its making that noise.

it almost sounds like the belt is somewhat falling apart like the renforcing string inside the belt is pelling out and slaping on the cover, but being that you have the cover off and seen the belt i imagen that you would have noticed that already, if these bubles are large then i would change the belt soon, that could have been what is rubbing on the cover. and i wouldn't sand it either not worth it and it won't make a diffrence, if any diffrence - worse. try runing it with the cover off and see if it gose away !!

Is your wife related to mine? LOL A couple things come to mind. A new belt may be in order. Sounds also like you may have a sticky primary or secondary. As you let off the throttle either one is staying where it is for a second or two causing slack in the belt to push out towards the housing. Get the rear end up on jack stands and with the cover off run it. See if the primary or secondary are moving in and out smoothly. Look for the belt to be comeing out of the pulleys where the scrapes on the cover are. My guess is really the primary not disengaging quickly. Could just need cleaning or a new spring.

My Explorer was making a noise similar to that and turns out my kid was putting her foot on the cover while we were riding. It could be that the cover has been pushed down and made loose by this action or your belt is deteriorating.?.? Good Luck.

Mine also did that, right before it actually shredded. The backing on it started peeling off and thats the end of it. Before I even got back to camp the backing had tore off and the noise was gone but the belt still worked for awhile after that just slipped alot.

Wow, (note the first entry date). To update I took it to the dealer since it was under warrenty and they put a new belt in it. I didn't really think it was the belt but that fixed it.

Actually there was too much slack in the belt and it was hitting the cover. The dealer said the width was not what it should be (too skinny). I figure since she drives so slow there would be alot of slippage when she takes off and this would wear the width of the belt down faster than normal
