2500 lb winch
I have a 2500# winch on my 700EFI and have had to use it twice. Once in the snow and the other night out in the mud. The one in the mud was pretty bad I was riding along side of a woods in a field when all of a sudden she went down right over the floor boards it was just like being in wet cement really runny. Didn't even know if the winch would get me out, found a tree and gave it a tug, pulled myself right out. Glad I opted for the winch instead of the plow. 2500 lb winch
A friend of mine has a 400 eiger with a 2000lb warn. It has pulled his quad, my rancher, and a sp500 out of everthing we've ever gotten stuck in. He had fallen through our 3 and a half foot deep ice racing practice pond. I put my rancher up on the bank and he pulled himself up and over the 3 foot burm on the side of the pond. Strong winch. I would say that the extra weight of your polaris should be fine with the 2500. Of course, the 3k is about 100 bucks more.

2500 lb winch
I have a 2500 lbs Warn on my 600, and it has done a really great job so far. Although I haven't been stuck in mud, I have used it to pull my quad up some extremely steep hills, I have used it to pull out my friends Rancher many times, and I have also used it to stretch wire for a fence. I am really pleased with my Warn and the job it has done so far. Like treedoc said, if in dought add a ****** block. I carry one, but have never had to use it.
P.S.
A winch is by far the best thing to add to a utility quad.
