Default advise needed carb problems 700sp

I have a 2003 sportsman 700 its stock and the problems I have I beleave are carb related: I checked plugs they are white, But it seems to run hard at first start and has poor excelleration in low end, it also smells rich and blows alittle black smoke which the smoke goes away after it is ran for about 10 mins. Is there anything I can do? I would also like to know of any recalls if any?

How many hours are on the bike? Some times the dealer messes with the enrichment circuit for break in purposes or does not prep the bike at all....and what temperature are you at?

I also have a 03' 700 and had the same problems. I dropped mine off at the dealer this morning and the service writer said that there was a service bulletin on possible jetting problems. He told me that they did a bunch of 700's with the same problems last fall.

There is a carb update kit that your dealer should be aware of since it is a recall item. The kit replaces the main jet with a 157.5 the pilot with a 45 if needed and the needle jet. With the white plugs, you are running lean in whatever rpm range you last ran it hard in. To figure it out, you will have to pull the plugs after several runs at different rpm levels to narrow it down. Idle can usually be adjusted by the mixture screw, midrange by the needle jet and wot will be your main jet. There is a pretty good thread going at atv quad squad under the Polaris section. Lots of detail. Hope this helps.
