chattering under acceleration...

I have never had the clutches appart. The belt is supposed to be for my year quad. I bought it from a dealer. I want to say that with the quad not running or at idle the belt sits in the driven clutch very loosly. It don't weven appear to be touching on either side. I'll have to check to make sure though.
This is driving me nuts. If I take it somewhere to get fixd will I still be able to put springs in my clutch later when I want to add a kit. Or should I just have the dealer do that as well. I am all about doing things myself. I like to learn this sort of thing. I just go a polaris book. I'll go thorough it to see about this stuff.

It's not that difficult, if you want to learn doing it yourself is the best way. First off get a service manual, it will have the information you need to set things up right. Belts vary so this needs to be checked when you replace it. Set a straight edge on top of the belt that extends over both clutches, push down lightly on the belt in the middle between the clutches, measure the gap between the belt and the bottom of your straight edge at the point your pushing on it. 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" is what you want. If it's more than 1 1/4" the driven clutch (rear) will need to be disassembled and a shim removed until the belt deflection is with in the spec range. This adjustment doesn't affect the clutch kits (springs, weights).
Also make sure your engine mounts are ok and tight, the measurement between the clutch centers should be very close to 10". If it's much less then the engine needs to be moved forward in the frame.

Thanks for the directions. The first thing I will do is check the engine mounts. Being its so old and my friends neglect it may very well be the mounts broken or loose. I almost would bet that is the problem. Or at least I hope it to be.

Ok I checked the motor mounts. They seem to be fine. I did notice the front one looked distorted a little. The rubber bushing looks to be streached down a little. I wonder if this is normal. Their are no cracks and the bolts are tight.
I did measure between the 2 clutches. I did this from the center bolt of each. It measures about 10 1/4 center to center.
Upon further inspection. My chain appears to be very loose. It has conciderable wear marks on the tops and sides of the chain. Also my chain guard seems to be eaten up. Could the chain stand to be tightend a little. If so is their an easy way to do this. The chain is also very dry. I will oil it and let it sit a while.
Another thing about the clutch. The back (big clutch part) has play in it. I can turn it front and back until it engages something. It rocks a little if you know what I mean. This may be normal. I wish this forum would allow pics. I could show you guys some stuff.
Thanks

Ok I remeasured the distance in the clutches it is 10 inches. I added pics of this, the chain, the motor mount, and my clutch cover in my bio. It will take a while before they approve the bio post. I hope they let it through. That way you guys can see something.
THanks

Here is an update. I put a strap on the rear and tightened it down so the sprocket and rear were in line. The chain tightened up a lot. It still had 1/4 play in in. So I oiled it and ran it for a while. I made a few jumps etc. I got cought up on a small tree laying over. I heard a hop. I thought the tree snapped. I hit the gas and the bike shuttered. I broke some teeth on my front sprocket. Boy I hope that is not hard to replace. When I order new should I get a stock one. I may just fix this thing and sell it. Then buy new. This thing kills me. Every weekend I get about 20-30 min play time then I brake something. I order the parts on monday. I get them by friday. Saturday I usually get them on and Sunday I brake it. This sucks.

I was getting the impression you had chain/sprocket problems, change both sprockets and the chain. I use Sunstar sprockets and D I D X-ring chains, you would also be wise to install a chain tensioner. Look the machine over good and see what it needs then decide whether you want to put money into it or sell and get something else.

My next order is like this.
Front sprocket shold I change the tooth?
Rear sprocket
Auto chain tensioner. It was only like $55
I have a brand new polaris Chain not installed.
I would like to get the HPH Trail pipe
HPD jet kitt
HPT clutch kit,
I am still unsure if i need inner and outer clutch belt cases yet. I was wondering if the shift kit would take up some belt slack.
Do you think the shuttering that I was feeling was the front sprocket skipping. It didn't make a noise when it shuttered. But when I lost a few tips of the sprocket it souded like my gear case was all broke up.
Does the front sprocket pull off with a puller?

WOW $611.00 for all that stuff with the inner and outer belt covers, and seals. The dag on inner and outer cover and seals are around $210.00 I cant believe that. I know someone sells them much cheeper than that. Hopefully someone here will know. I got that price from partsland. That is a hit in the wallet for all that stuff. But I bet my quat will run good.

I would stay with the stock gearing, the front sprocket I think might be held on by a snap ring (My 95 Scrambler is) if that is the case just take off the snap ring and the sprocket should slide off (unless it's rusted on). Get all your mods from the same place, don't mix kits from different companies. The clutch kit will not change the belt deflection, get some new buttons for the rear clutch-it probably needs them and there only a few dollars. I would have to think your chain/sprocket was the source of the noise/vibration.
