Default chattering under acceleration...

I have noticed since I added my new belt that the quad chatters when I first take off. Any ideas on what this could be?

I have ridden on this new belt for a few weeks. I took the cover off and the edges of the belt look like they have been burned, and a cord is coming out of the side. What gives? I can also see that the belt as rubbed the case all around. On the top where the breather hole is has some strings cought up in it from the last belt. I can also see that the driven clutch has rubbed the case as well.

I assume that I have a warped case and need to update it. I have looked into this and man is that expensive....

The bike is a 97 400L sport the only mod is a filter.

I have pictures of the belt and case if anyone needs to see it.

Yeah you probably need to get a new case, I think the newer ones are bigger too. If you get a new one, get a new inside too...and you just as well as get a new belt too.

Bradracer18 IS RIGHT THE NEW COVERS ARE BIGGER AND YOU MUST BUY THE INNER TO USE THE NEW OUTER COVER THE NEW AND OLD ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE THE NEW INNER COVER COMES WITH NEW SCREWS YOU WILL NEED TO BUY THE TWO SEALS FOR THE COVERS AND MAKE SURE YOU BELT TENSION IS CORRECT GOOD LUCK

Ok I got the cover thing figured out.

WHAT is this belt tension thing. All I did was get a new belt. I put it on the front clutch the put it on the bottom half of the rear roller, and pushed the quad forward a little and it went on. Are you telling me their is some kind of adjustment. How is this done. I think it may be what is wrong. It does look loose sitting there. I know it needs to be. But to someone who has no idea on what they are looking at I have no idea what it should look like. Please fill me in on this adjustment...

Thanks
RYAN

THERE IS A SPECIFIC BELT TENSION ON A POLARIS TO ADJ THIS YOU MUST ADD OR SUBTRACT SHIMS FROM TO DRIVEN CLUTCH THIS SHOULD ONLY BE DONE AT A DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IF YOU DO NOT GET THE CLUTCH BACK TOGETHER RIGHT THE TENSION OF THE BELT WILL BE THE LEAST OF YOUR WORRIES GOOD LUCK

It's not tension it is alignment. the tensoining is done in the clutches! What you do need to do is have your drive to driven clutches aligned so it won't wear your belts out. I have no idea what a dealer charges for this but it can't be much.
Just out of curiosity, did you pull your clutches off and maybe miss a shim???

TENSION ON THE BELT ON A POLARIS THAT DOES NOT HAVE A E.B.S CLUTCH MUST BE DONE ANYTIME YOU REPLACE THE BELT THIS IS DONE WITH THE MACHINE OFF THE CLUTCHES DO NOT ADJ THE TENSION FOR YOU ON THERE OWN. YOU THEN MEASURE THE SLACK IN THE BELT THEN YOU ADJ THE BELT BY ADDING OR SUBTRACTING SHIMS FROM TO DRIVEN CLUTCH YOUR LOCAL DEALER WILL HAVE THE SERVICE LIMIT AND AS FOR THE CLUTCH ALIGNMENT THERE IS POLARIS TOOL TO CHECK THIS AND IF IT NEED THIS YOU MUST ADD OR SUBTRACT SHIMS FROM THE MOUNTS ON THE ENGINE AND TRANS. NOT A EASY JOB

OK, Ill bite

Where do the shims go to adjust the tension?? The only ones I have seen when I had my clutches apart are the ones on the shaft for alignment. Is this a way of preloading the drive clutch so it rides closer to the belt ?? I have never heard anything on this so now I am really curious

By shimming the driven(secondary) you close the sheaves there by forcing the belt further out of the sheaves making the belt tighter.

The shims to adjust belt deflection are in the secondary clutch between the clutch halves, to reduce deflection remove shims--to increase it add shims. He may have the wrong belt, also your installation of the belt is not right-you may have damaged it. You can open the secondary clutch by hand (trans in gear-brake locked) and easily slip the belt on.....
