It's not good. Whether it's a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke, you should keep mixtures and levels at manufacturers suggested levels.

Default too much oil

to much oil can cause it to foam and sloah and even eventually seize parts

Default too much oil

okey, so i agree with all that too much oil is not good, but can anyone tell me why when i bought my 03 sp 600
the dipstick showed it was over full, and when i change the oil and filter, and refill it with 2 qts per my dealer and
the manual it still shows overfull by almost 1/2 inch????

Dan, I don't have a good answer for you but when I bought my 2004 Trail Boss it was about 3/4 inch overfilled, as shown on the stick. Of course the dealer said he "checked it" prior to delivery. BS. So I sucked the excess oil out until it met the Full mark. Then when I changed oil/filter the first time I simply added oil up to the Full mark and had some left over from my 2 quarts (after starting the engine to fill the filter). One of life's mysteries! Bottom line: I would go with the dipstick level Full mark as the final determination.

Right again HornedToad! Same thing here. When I screwed in the oil dipstick to check the oil, it was high - new from the dealer. Now I just go by the stick.

Hey Toad, I still hear you screaming when loading that boss. Did you get ramps (LOL).

Checked mine yesterday in the new 500HO....about 1/2" over the full mark! I'll be doing my 10 hour change in about 5 more hours of ride time so I think I'll pull a little out now and check the level after my oil change.

Default too much oil

My nephew wanted to ride the wifes Trail Balzer. Told him to bring me the dipstick to see how much oil was in it. After a while he gave up and asked to ride my Boss. 2 quarts and a filter puts the level just above the full mark on the Boss.

Correct my if I wrong but doesn't the manaul say to run the ATV for about 20-30 seconds and then check the oil level on the dip stick?

The capacities (sp) are for a dry engine, trans, or whatever you are filling. I just changed all of my fluids today on a 04-500HO and it took about 1 1/2 qts. of oil the book calls for two. Also the other fluids I put in were a little less than the book calls for. This is due to not being able to drain everything dry.
