I need to clean my hubs? need help quik, it is apart
#1
I have been having a problem with my right side hub kicking in without the AWD on. I have tried changing the oil a couple times, but have had no luck. The oil has been pretty clean looking. What should I do? Is there something that I can put in there to clean it and then flush it out, like WD40 or something? Any other suggestions. I would pull it apart and clean it but I don''t have a repair manual for the torq specs and how to's...

You will have to take it apart to clean it. Your armature plate MAY be the cause if the sticking hub. If it is bent the slightest amount, it may be kicking in, as there is only a few thousands tolerance on it. You can refer to this diagram for how the hub goes back together, but I will try and explain the process the best I can
1. Raise the front end
2. Remove the wheel and brake caliper
3. Remove the hub cap and drain the fluid
4. Remove the cotter pin and nut
5. Remove the front bearing
6. Remove the hub, be careful because the "guts" may come out with it
7. Now you can remove the other bearing, the hillard clutch, the armature plate, and the bearing inside the strut housing (PAY ATTENTION TO THE ORIENTATION OF THE BEARINGS)
8. Now you can use some brake clean to clean everything off (BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL WHEN HANDLEING THE HILLARD CLUTCH)
9. Put everything back together in reverse order.
10. Torque the spindle nut to 160-170 inch lbs while rotating the hub (this will seat the bearings)
11. Back the nut off 1/2 turn
12. Rotate the hub a few more times
13. Re-torque the nut to 108-144 inch lbs
14. Install the cotter pin, cover, and refill with new fluid
15. Re-install the brake caliper and torque the bolts to 18 ft lbs
16. Reinstall the front wheels and torque to 15ft lbs

well I gotter taken apart, but I didn't find that it was dirty at all. There were a very small amount of metal flakes inside but you could hardly feel them.
I did notice however that the NUT came off rather easily, definatly not 100inch lbs.
Whet else should I be looking for here? what kind of ware?

Thanks for the help. I checked all bearings and the races and they look good. All that I can see is that the grooves where the armature plate fits in on the role cage have dings on it from possibly to much slop. I will reassemble and try it again. If it still persist, I'll have to opt to replace those two items...
Thanks again. Red

LOL. No wonder I was only had 3wd for a while huh? Felt like a Honda
Well, you can A. Clean it up and put it back together and hope that it solved the problem. Or B. Clean it up, replace the armature plate and put it back together and hope it solved the problem.
