Actually you can use a tach/hour meter that they sell at lawnmower parts/repair shops for either 2 or 4 strokes - it has an inductive lead that wraps around the spark plug wire, and an LED readout -- the one I am familiar with is made by SenDEC (model # 806-100-0222), has a Rotary part # 32-9359, reads up to 9,000 rpm, runs around $50 and can be mounted just about anywhere

I use one of those for our lawnmower rpm setting. The bad thing about it is that it doesnt read fast enough changes for me. Brad, buy the cheapest,smallest tach and set it on the 4-cylinder setting for your 400 2-stroke. They actually read well until about 7500 or farther.
