I don't think its the ebs it makes the noise say i'm going down the road and hold on the thumb it does it even when i'm not letting off the gas. Its sounds like its pinging but not a even pinging. I thought a piston was defected or something. Dobie

It would help to listen to it in person, but you made good sounds in your message. The best guess i have is the ebs clutch. The 04.5 500's have a different ebs driven clutch than the older ones. This new ebs clutch has what looks like a bow tie on the outside clutch sheave, when the driven clutch opens up or closes or when you accellerate or let off gas, that bow tie is turning back and forth on the transmission shaft, when the bow tie turns it knocks or pings back and forth on the outer driven sheave.
Basically each time you give it gas or let off the driven sheave is opening and closing and that bow tie things is going back/forth metal against metal causing a sound.

It may not be this, but this is a standard sound on these machines w/ ebs clutches, all i know

The 500 HO motor is a noisy motor. You gotta remember that is has solid lifters which are definately not quiet. The other place that could be causeing the noise is the buttons in the primary clutch. They are fairly noisy as well. I mostly hear the noises in my motor at idle. It makes a knocking ticking sound type sound (from the lifters) It is possible that the lifters arent adjusted properly which would cause more noise. If it really has you that worried, have your dealer look more into it. Ask to hear another SP500 and see if it sounds the same as yours

I had a 01 ho that had alot of valve noise and my new 04.5 does the same thing , I think most of the ho"s are like this because they have a fairly agressive camshaft , my buddies 2000 500 non ho is a lot quieter, but it is worth it in my opinion for the extra power ,and I think you kind of get use to it after a while and you don"t notice it as much, also it might quiet down a bit after it breaks in.

My 2004.5 sp500 makes the same sound and has since I got it. It almost sounds like a diesel engine. I've got 2080 miles on it and everything has been fine.

I had a 2002 HO and just got the 2004.5HO. The 2002 had more engine noise than the 2004.5 but close. It really bothered me at first but I have ridden other 500's and seen a lot o miles put on these engnines and I don't think anyone is having problems with durability (providing the oil changes, not taking care of underwater abuse etc). I wouldn't worry about it, they all have it.

Thanks to all for your help. I have 160 miles on it now and have been off road on one trip. What kind of service do you all do to your 500 after a ride? I'm taking mine in for the first oil change at 200 miles. Other than that I've done nothing to it. Should I be doing something such as grease fittings ect.? Thanks. Dobie

You should probably look at the hour meter more than miles for the oil changes. I think 20 hours is supposed to be the first one. If you went into fairly deep water, I would drain the front diff and see if any water made it in. It wouldn't hurt to do the same with the transmission. You will also want to put grease in the fittings everytime you play in some water to force it out of the joints. The more severe off road riding, the more you will want to inspect / clean things up.

Most small high performance engines are loud. That's just the way it is... my motorcycles are loud too.
