Just bought this 500 HO and love it but do have a question for you 500 owners. My engine seems very noisey. When I am going say 20 mph or faster it sounds like I have piston slap or something. The engine almost sounds like a diesel! Anyone else notice this with your 500 ho? Also it seems worse when going down a hill and I let off the thumb. Its just pings away. Thanks Dobie

yeah i have that too. it has to do with the High output carb that makes it sound desiel remember these things even tho its a 500 they have big bores and that will make the engine have a lower pitch and the higoutput carb even makes it better love the sound.
what do you mean by a piston slap because i dont hear anything like that when riding

 

My scrambler 500HO is still breaking in (2004) and it sounds diff. every time I ride it. When I asked to dealer he said its just breaking in the parts. I do recall some noises like that. I thought my oil might be getting low but it was fine. This is my first atv so im kind of clueless. If its new it might be the same thing, if not maybe thats just the way they sound after time.

 

Its hard to describe the sound but sounds like its pinging on real bad gas. it goes ping, ding clunk, rattle ding , ping clunck. thats the best I can do! It sounds like something inside the engine is loose or a little sloppy inside the engine. I hear it mainly when I'm on pavement. When in the woods i'm never going consistantly enough to hear. see now mine doesnt sound anything like that at all maybe there is somethinng worng with the engine. how long is it under warrenty

 

I've only had 3 to 4 weeks. It has plenty of power and all. It just sounds bad. What does yours sound like? Dobie

 

mine sounds pretty smooth, u can hear the valves open and shut its like a light metallic tapping, i took it apart and they are set right so thats fine. other then that i think it sounds perfect. i did think of something, are you sure that sound is coming from your engine and not your EBS because mine does make a light knocking kinda of sound and i was told this is normal this could very well have to do with yours also. start up your quad and listen to your engine closely see if it sounds unusal.

from other aspects if your engine is making knocking sounds you could have shot piston rod bearings. it is important to see what is wrong with itbecause it can cause major problems in the future.

personally i think it is your EBS nothing to worry about. PM BigBadScrambler he has all the knwledge that you will need. hopefully i helped you out somewhat
