Default 1997 Polaris Sport 400

Continuing on with my search for an ATV, this is my recent find. A 1997 Polaris Sport 400L, description: like new, very little use. $2500. All I need some help with is knowing if these are good machines, do they have alot of problems, and does this sound like a good price (I'd rather talk him down and then have more money for mods ) I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

rdg72, We bought our 94 Polaris 400L Sport for $1600 and it came with extra sand tires. The only complaint I have of our is the transmission. It has some belt slippage. It's the wife's bike and she won't let me touch it, or should I say put money into it.

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

Good machines but he price is a little on the high side.$2100 would be more in line. But if you like it and it is in great shape it would be fair.

Yes, price is a little steep. You should be able to find a good clean 99 concentric drive for that much. Pre-99's had swingarm bolt trouble, the brake disc on the tranny wasnt as good but was still OK. I would definitely talk him down. NADA shows average retail to be only $1595.00. Above average would still not be near what he wants. Hope this helps,Bubba

First, Thanks for all the help. I was wandering what exactly is this cocentric drive system and what would this 97 Sport have?

I have a 97 sport i paid about 1500 5 monthes ago it is a good quad great for mods and they just keep pushing through anything the concentric drive keeps the chain at the same tenshion no matter what the travel of the suspension if that makes any sence...

Yeah Price is surely steep...I sold my '98 sport 3 years ago for $2100 and it was mint and was set up real nice. I'd say $1500.

My buddy has a 2001 Scrammy 500 4x4 and I think he's asking less than $2500 for it.

Just to add to Jayblazer's statement, the concentric drive is better in several ways. It has much bigger beefier swingarm bushings and lockdowns. The swingarm pivot is in line with the sprocket and that keeps the chain tension more equal throughout suspension travel. The last best thing is that you get the rear brakes moved to the rear axle which is better in my opinion. Unless the rear brakes have been totally removed, the best and fastest way to see if a sport or scrammy is a 99 or later is look for the rear caliper setup on the left side of the axle.
