For those of you with a lazy 00 sp500, Polaris has a service notice out that suggests going up to a 162.5 main jet. Seems odd to me-performance= lean not going richer. The 2000's must be starving for fuel.

I just looked in the on-line parts manual and the standard jet for the 2000 Sportsman is 152.5 and the standard main jet for the Magnum is 165 so it looks like the Sportsman is a little lean if they do indeed have a 152.5 from the factory.

The Mag. 500 has a larger air intake than the Sportsman that atributes to the larger main size. 98 and earlier Sportsman 500's have a smaller air intake compared to the 99 and up Sportsman's that is why the earlier models have a smaller main along with other carb mods. I converted my 97 to 00 air cleaner and carb components and could not see any apprecable differance.

My SP500 will do about 54 mph MAX. Is this the norm? Is this an item we can take up with a dealer while it's still under warranty, and they'll "fix" it for FREE??

Polarisman:
How many miles have you rode sence you have looked at the air fitler? Could be when it was new it ran faster and now the filter is dirty and causing a rich condition and slowing it down. Speed is relative to altitude, weather and the fat a$$ on the seat.

I dont think the speedos are correct on these machines.Because when me and my brother race his machine will say 55 and mine will read 48 but we are staying even.Just something to keep in mind when you talk top end speed.

I only wiegh 110, the air filter was just cleaned for the first time at 1000 miles. It was barely dirty. Oiled it and put it back. IT is the middle of summer and days are between 75-90+ I am a little bit above sea level. I will get clocked by a cop to see if the speedo is correct. But should i take it in to the dealer. Maybe tell them i lost a little top end power. They look at me wierd when i am telling whats wrong with the ATV. They are surprised at how much i know
