Default 97 scrambler 500 questions

i just became the proud owner of a 97 polaris scrambler 500 4x4. there are some rather scary sounds coming from the large pulley on the l side of the atv. i have replaced the belt and the problem still persists. does anyone know what the problem might be and where i can get the parts to fix it?

I also want to start customizing my little mule with racks and maybee a winch. any help on locations of those things too would be the greatest help to me
Thanx!

What kind of noise? Most likely it is the buttons in the clutch. Unless you have the special tools to do it, I would take it to the dealer. Or, at the least, buy a puller and pull the clutch off then take it to them. For racks go with the Pure Polaris units. They also have a winch kit for it too. I believe that Cycle Country does also. And welcome to the forums!!

The "big"pulley is the secondary clutch and the noise is either the buttons like BBS said or a broken spring.I would sugest you getting a service manual before you get anything else and read up on the maintanence on this machine. They are great quads but require a large amount of care.

thanx alot! I just got a manual from ebay for this thing and took the driven pulley apart and dissambled the clutch kit. it is worn all over the place...there are 4 screw heads floating around in there and the spring is worn and oblong at the bottom. so i guess i need a clutch kit and new driven pulley. im sure ill be using this forum alot because ive always wanted a 4 wheeler and now i finally was able to afford one. although it was an old one

As for the wheels, the bolt pattern for the front of the scram is 4/156 and the rear is 4/4. You are going to have to find out what bolt pattern the Artic Cat is. Maybe post that question in the Artic Cat forum. Those guys would know.

For the driven clutch. You can rebuild it. EPI sells a rebuild kit. Or, if the bushings are still good, just replace the buttons with either OEM's, the HPD aluminum buttons, or a roller kit from Aaen. While you are at it, get a violet secondary spring from HPD and set it on the 2-2 position. Or, you can get a complete clutch kit from HPD to take care of the spring and weights for the drive clutch and the spring and helix for the driven clutch. OR you can just get a complete TEAM clutch from HPD. That is a little more $$$$ though. I know, lots of OR's

Before droping a ton of $$$$$$ into this quad I would get on ebay and get aa used secondary to see how the thing is going to be and to see if you like it enough to start modifing it out.
