700/600 pull start

Default 700/600 pull start

I was wondering why the 700 and 600 don't have back-up recoil pull starters? How would you start it out in the woods if the battery was dead? [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img] Please enlighten me here and thanks.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif[/img]

I heard they did not add pull starters to these motors because of a width issue. Some people think these motors are alrady too wide and if you added a pull starter, it woul get even wider.

If you ride alone, you would not be able to start your ATV if the battery dies. If you carry a set of small gauge jumper cables and you ride with someone, they could jump start you.

I have contemplated the idea of adding a pull starter. The military version offers a pull start or you could get one off the Polaris Frontier Touring snowmobile (it uses the same motor).

The reason for not haveing a recoil start is not because of width. It is no wider to add a recoil. The reason is compression,compression,compression! The 600 and 700 vtwin has alot of compression. No one would have enough ba!!s to pull a recoil on a vtwin. And if the recoil would happen to snap back it would probably rip your fingers off. Thats it!

Uh, they're not V-twins, they're a parallel twin. And as Polaridoo mentioned, you can pull start the sled. Sleds come with a piece of rope in the tool box in case the recoil breaks you can start it by wrapping the rope around the primary clutch and pulling. Not sure how long it would take you to pull the clutch cover off and do it on an SP, but I guess it would be better than walking 20 miles through the woods.

The military uses the 700 and a couple of variations, they have emergency pull ropes on them. You can start them with a pull starter, I have done it. It is harder than a honda but there is alittle more motor there too, and you won't haveta worry about the neighbors kids starting with the rope either. Once you get it turning its actually rather smooth!

I was just supprise that they didn't put one on it. I used to have a 75hp yamaha boat motor and it had a pull rope in the top of the caling for emergency situtations, but I never used it. I just figured they would have one on for safety when you are by yourself. I guess you could always carry an extra battery, although that would be bulky.

does any one make atv jumper cables? or do you have to lug around big automotive ones?

i think that would be kinda cool to have a set of "mini" jumper cables along for the ride in my tool box.

I have seen smaller cables but I dont rememeber where. Maybe Montana Jacks, or cycle country. they are out there or maybe a cheap set for an auto cheap usually means smaller wire and clips.

northern has small ones for atv I have some with all the time just in case but it was the width issue

I agree that it would take a healthy pull to get a SP600 or SP700 started, but far from impossible. Also remember, even though both pistons are moving up and down at the same time, they are at different phases, so you get the help of the other piston (which means you are not compressing both cylinders at the same time)
