head gasket shot!
As I am sure some of you know, a head gasket can leak in many places on a liquid cooled engine. It may leak oil into the water, water into the oil, oil out of the engine, water out of the engine, or any combination of these and probably more, or none at all and not all the time. It would be good luck to find a leaking head gasket with only a visual test.
You should use all of the good advise posted here to diaginois your problem as it could be as simple as the thermostat.
Its hard to fix anything if you don't know for sure what is broke. I think that is where the term "shade tree" comes from. You spend alot of time replacing things that are not the problem trying to find the real problem.
Good luck.
PS the troubleshooting section of the repair manual might help.

Check the oil. If it is a milky grey color then you know for sure its the head gasket...easy way to tell without doing a compression check.

He also said it wasn't smoking meaning no water can be entering the cylinder.

Coolant in the oil. Yes I know it won't always do this BUT it is an easy way to tell, a 2 minute check.
